Growth & Community Outreach at Wausau’s Hemophilia Center with Angie Farrar

Welcome to Beyond the Bleeds. Today, we sit down with Angie Farrar, lead nurse coordinator at the Hemophilia Outreach Center’s Wausau location, to discuss the center’s vital role in improving bleeding disorder care in central Wisconsin. We delve into the challenges patients face in rural areas and the significant strides made in education and outreach to better serve individuals with bleeding disorders.

Angie Farrar brings over 15 years of nursing experience to her role at the Hemophilia Outreach Center. With a background in surgery and outpatient care, Angie joined HOC seeking more family time while continuing to serve patients. Her dedication has been instrumental in growing the patient base in Wausau and enhancing the center’s outreach programs within the community.

“We’ve definitely changed the way people with bleeding disorders are being treated
in central Wisconsin.” – Angie Farrar

Today on Beyond the Bleeds:

  • Hemophilia Outreach Center expanded to Wausau in March 2022, significantly reducing drive times for central Wisconsin patients.
  • Angie’s experience in surgery and outpatient care led her to join HOC, and she was attracted by its comprehensive patient services.
  • The Wausau center has grown from 10 to nearly 50 patients in two years, marking substantial progress in outreach and care accessibility.
  • Education is a key focus, with emergency medical staff and nursing students receiving targeted training on bleeding disorders.
  • Collaborative efforts with local EMS have improved emergency response and patient information management for bleeding disorder incidents.
  • Wausau provides comprehensive care, including phlebotomy, infusions, and access to ancillary services like physical therapy during clinic days.
  • Patients can self-refer to the clinic, simplifying the discovery and diagnosis process for potential bleeding disorders.
  • As a 340B entity, HOC can provide patients with free initial labs, reducing financial barriers to diagnosis and treatment.
